Vegan by nature.
Vegan Makeup: For animal welfare and your health
A Global Commitment
Today, we are witnessing a real proliferation of new makeup formulas described as organic makeup, natural makeup, or even vegan makeup. These different makeup formulas imply profound differences in terms of formula design itself. These products, whose manufacturing method and component origin meet strict requirements in terms of manufacturing conditions. However, not all of them comply with the same closely monitored criteria for dermatological and environmental safety. Vegan makeup is extremely specific and focuses more particularly on the composition of the products, the origin of their components, and the packaging surrounding them. However, we cannot conceive of a product without taking into account its quality and its benefits for your health.
"However, vegan makeup is not synonymous with natural makeup. These are two distinct commitments and concepts." Le Rouge Français
Vegan Makeup: Definition and Explanations
Vegan makeup is a cosmetic product whose composition and packaging are entirely thought out and designed without using any animal-derived substances. Indeed, most cosmetic products are made with animal-derived components such as honey, beeswax, or even milk and animal fats. This way of designing cosmetic products is relatively old and implies the use of components derived from animals, but also the testing of said products on animals. Consequently, when we talk about vegan makeup products, we mean products whose formula is free of animal-derived components. In short: no animal has been exploited, neither directly nor indirectly, during the manufacturing process.
Today, many entities in the cosmetic sector are positioning themselves on vegan makeup, because it not only has a significant advantage in terms of animal welfare, but also naturally attributes a good image to the brand. However, vegan makeup is not synonymous with natural makeup. Indeed, due to the fact that their composition excludes animals, many chemical components are likely to enter the formulas of vegan makeup products. There are therefore many vegan products manufactured according to the criteria of certain labels that are actually very chemical.
Vegan by Le Rouge Français
Le Rouge Français makes it a point of honor to create natural and vegan products. This means that our house has worked with precision to find the best possible alternatives to offer its customers products that are good for health and the environment.
This search for alternatives has led us to use rice wax instead of beeswax, for example, which is a widely used product in natural cosmetic compositions. In addition, rice wax has excellent properties in terms of elasticity and allows the epidermis to regain a fresh, smooth, pleasant, and light texture. Our unique, natural, and vegan formulas allow us to move away from the massive industrialization of beeswax, which deeply harms biodiversity.
Furthermore, our natural makeup house has found interesting alternatives to cochineal insects, which are regularly used in natural products. Used mainly for their carminic acid, which they produce to protect themselves from predators, this substance is regularly used in the manufacture of a red dye used for cosmetics.
Beyond the fact that this red dye comes from an animal and does not meet the manufacturing criteria dear to our house, carminic acid can cause allergic skin reactions and also presents dangers for the digestive system. Knowing that a good part of each lipstick is inevitably ingested by the person wearing it, it is important that it is absolutely safe for the health of our customers.
Our selection criteria for products, according to their environmental impact and beneficial properties, are very strict and meet the requirements of several labels.
Labels that commit
The production of vegan and natural cosmetics necessarily implies compliance with very strict criteria in terms of quality, composition, and manufacturing method. Le Rouge Français, as an ethical and committed house, only manufactures its vegan and natural cosmetics according to the criteria of demanding labels.
Our labels guarantee our customers the natural, organic, and vegan nature of our products: virtuous and trusted beauty represents the cornerstone of our house.
We work with Cosmos Organic (Ecocert and Organic label) which guarantees the organic nature of our products, the PETA label which ensures the vegan and cruelty-free nature of our products, and of course the "Made in France" label which affirms the 100% French origin of our products.
Vegan Makeup: The Best Clean Beauty Solution?
You have surely already come across the following very trendy term today: Clean Beauty. Literally translating to "Clean Beauty," this concept refers to makeup products that are not composed of any so-called chemical substances that could harm the health of those who wear them. These products appeared a few years ago in response to multiple health scandals concerning them, yet well-known and used daily by thousands of people. They were composed of preservatives that could cause very serious allergic reactions such as methylisothiazolinone. The latter causes swelling and inflammation of the skin, sometimes hives leaving unfortunately lasting scars on the skin…
To counteract this, various makeup manufacturers turned to other components such as parabens, which admittedly have recognized preservative properties, but are no less harmful to the skin. In addition to this, the cosmetics sector also faced a serious scandal: some beauty products include chemical elements in their composition that disrupt the development and hormonal function of young children or even adults. These endocrine disruptors have permanently sealed the very negative reputation of cosmetic products.
Clean Beauty is a deep awareness, predominantly observed among consumers: they are increasingly inclined to meticulously analyze the compositions of their cosmetics, refusing to automatically trust manufacturers. Seeking products whose composition is more respectful of their skin, preserving their health and the environment, consumers have given a significant impulse to the cosmetic sector through this movement. Thanks to this phenomenon, many applications have appeared to answer the many questions of consumers, helping them to decipher the sometimes very chemical components of their products. From this verification reflex, the concept of Clean Beauty was born.
Clean Beauty is an active approach on the part of manufacturers and consumers: the highlighting of a minimalist approach to formulas created to promote an optimization of the active ingredients in the formula. This new way of doing things tends to reduce the superfluous to avoid undesirable effects: skin irritation, endangering health, ingestion of endocrine disruptors by the body. The solution is to create formulas with few ingredients, precisely chosen for their effectiveness and virtuous properties, in addition to their supposed absence of negative effects on the skin, health, and if possible on the environment.
Finally, some houses are working on integrating an ecological dimension into their packaging, taking animal welfare into account. In short, Clean Beauty refers to organic, natural, vegan, cruelty-free makeup, all in one product… Le Rouge Français is part of this approach of transparency regarding the composition of its ranges. Vegan makeup and its advent is a logical consequence of this movement. More than a simple aesthetic choice, vegan makeup results from an awareness that is found in Clean Beauty.
Vegan Consumption: A Societal Choice
Vegan makeup can attract people who, at first glance, were not sensitive to animal protection issues.
Vegan makeup is not necessarily synonymous with a vegan lifestyle. It is certainly an essential accessory for vegan people who wish to wear makeup, but it more broadly encompasses a desire to consume better and less. Minimalism in terms of consumption is a growing movement that, like Clean Beauty, is part of a general desire to pay attention to the products we ingest or use.
The philosophy accompanying people who prefer vegan makeup echoes a desire to work, through daily actions, to preserve the environment by choosing products manufactured with respect for it and also with self-respect. Our world, facing climate change harmful to biodiversity, must adapt and move towards a better-thought-out type of production of our products. The beauty sector cannot ignore these fundamentals, knowing that today, our technology allows us to produce better, consume better, and above all waste less.
Vegan makeup is very open to innovation, allowing a return to essentials in terms of style, while having innovative formulas. The latter is now widely discussed and helps to raise customer awareness about a whole philosophy of consumption, personal hygiene, and life around this concept of environmentally friendly consumption. Far from the idea of using only natural makeup, sometimes somewhat outdated, vegan makeup can attract people who, at first glance, were not sensitive to animal and environmental protection issues.
Innovation is at the heart of the matter for any house of vegan, organic, and natural cosmetics. Efficiency combined with the safety of formulas must respect a certain ethic that cannot be put on the back burner. This ethic must be found from the design of the product to its sale in packaging itself designed according to the aforementioned ethical criteria. This demanding approach requires real involvement, a real effort of expertise, and above all, creativity.
